Kristallnacht, or the “Night of Broken Glass,” occurred on November 9-10, 1938, throughout Germany and Austria. It was a significant turning point for Jews in Germany and Austria. The Nazi Party, orchestrated the burning and destruction of 1,400 synagogues and 7,500 Jewish businesses that were vandalized, damaged, or destroyed. Hundreds of Jews were murdered and 30,000 were arrested and sent to concentration camps in that 24-hour period.
This year, the Columbia Holocaust Education Commission will remember Kristallnacht this November 15, by hosting a panel discussion with the three clergy of the Abraham’s Table podcast. Imam Omar Shaheed, Reverand Ellen Skidmore, and Rabbi Erik Uriarte will share their thoughts on the topic of “Seeking Hope, Being an Upstander,” moderated by USC Professor Saskia Coenen Snyder. By discussing this tragic event in history, we hope to remind ourselves and others of the horrific cost to humanity if we remain silent in the face of evil.
Please see the registration form inside to pre-register for this powerful commemoration. You won’t want to miss it.
